The House Sparrow was officially declared the State Bird of Delhi through a Delhi Gazette notification dated 5 October 2012, on the recommendation of the National Board for Wildlife.
This small and familiar passerine is strongly associated with human habitation and is widely distributed across Delhi’s urban and semi-urban landscapes. It feeds primarily on grain and weed seeds, supplemented by insects, and nests in cavities of buildings, trees and artificial nest boxes.
