Delhi’s Fauna & Flora

Birds

Delhi is home to a remarkable avian diversity. Based on the recent surveys (2025), 471 bird species have been recorded in Delhi.

The city has a long history of birdwatching and ornithological studies. For more than a century, researchers and birdwatchers have documented changes in the distribution, population, habitat and seasonal movement of birds across Delhi.

Birds of Delhi include resident birds - Coppersmith Barbet, Asian Koel, Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon, etc as well as local migrants - Purple Sunbird, Streak-throated Swallow, etc, winter visitors - Pied Avocet, White-tailed Lapwing, etc summer visitors - Brown-headed Gull. Its forests, wetlands, riverine areas, scrublands, grasslands and urban green spaces together support this rich avifaunal diversity.

Several bird species recorded in Delhi are also of conservation importance and fall under threatened or near-threatened categories of the IUCN Red List. Continued monitoring and protection of their habitats are therefore important for conserving Delhi’s bird diversity.
