Wildlife Wing
The Wildlife Wing of the Department of Forests & Wildlife, Government of NCT of Delhi, is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting, conserving and managing Delhi’s wildlife, natural habitats and protected areas.
The Wildlife Wing is headed by the Chief Wild Life Warden. Presently, the Department has four territorial divisions viz. North, South, Central and West; each headed by the Wild Life Warden/DCF.
Delhi’s natural heritage is closely linked with the Aravalli Range, one of India’s oldest geological formations. Its Delhi extension, known as the Delhi Ridge, forms an important green and ecological landscape within the National Capital Territory. The Ridge supports native flora and fauna, provides wildlife habitat, contributes to groundwater recharge, and helps regulate the urban environment.
The Delhi Ridge comprises the Northern, Central, South-Central, and Southern Ridge forests, covering approximately 7,784 hectares.
The Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Southern Ridge, represents the northeastern outliers of the Aravallis and is Delhi’s only Wildlife Sanctuary. It supports diverse native flora and fauna and serves as an important refuge for wildlife in the urban landscape.
The Wildlife Wing works towards wildlife conservation, habitat management, biodiversity protection, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, mitigation of human-wildlife conflict, research and public awareness with the objective of conserving Delhi’s natural heritage while promoting harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.
