Wildlife Wing
The Wildlife Wing of the Department of Forests & Wildlife, Government of NCT of Delhi, is entrusted with the conservation and management of Delhi’s wildlife, natural habitats and protected areas.
Delhi’s natural heritage is closely linked with the Aravalli Range, one of India’s oldest geological formations. Its Delhi extension, known as the Delhi Ridge, forms an important green and ecological landscape within the National Capital Territory. The Ridge supports native flora and fauna, provides wildlife habitat, contributes to groundwater recharge and helps regulate the urban environment.
The Delhi Ridge comprises Northern, Central, South-Central and Southern Ridge forests, covering approximately 7,777 hectares, with an additional 7-hectare area at Nanakpura notified as part of the Central Ridge.
The Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Southern Ridge, represents the northeastern outliers of the Aravallis and is Delhi’s only notified Wildlife Sanctuary. It supports diverse native flora and fauna and serves as an important refuge for wildlife in the urban landscape.
The Wildlife Wing works towards wildlife conservation, habitat management, biodiversity protection, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, mitigation of human-wildlife conflict, research, and public awareness, with the objective of conserving Delhi’s natural heritage while promoting harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife.
